Palmas

“Rhythm is the place where body and soul collide.”

Flamenco is a language and its study begins with understanding what is known as compas, the basic rhythmical structure that is the heart of flamenco.

Palmas is a style of handclapping used in flamenco to help internalize the compas and stay in time. In a simple way it is a bit like the metronome used in western music but is also much more complex than that.

There are two types of palmas. Palmas sordas and palmas claras. One is muted, the other one high pitched and each is used at a particular time. Good palmas technique can be a substitute for music when accompanying a dancer or singer. Same as for dancing, it can take years to master palmas and become a respected palmero.
